The Japanese Surrender ...

At 8.15 am on 6 August 1945, United States dropped the uranium atom bomb "Little Boy" on the city of Hiroshima. It had an explosive yield of around 15,000 tons of TNT. 90,000 were killed immediately and 145,000 within months. Three days later on 9 August 1945 at 11.02 am, the United States dropped the plutonium atom bomb "Fat Man" on Nagasaki. The plutonium bomb had an explosive yield of 21,000 tons of TNT. 45,000 were killed immediately and 75,000 more were dead by the end of 1945.
"A single nuclear weapon contains almost ten times the explosive force delivered by all of the allied air forces in the Second World War"

Banana Notes ....

A ration card is used to purchase esstential goods.

11:49 PM

The Japanese issued banana money as their main currency, giving them further control over the economy as Straits currency became rare. In this sense, the Japanese instituted elements of a command economy in which there were restrictions on how much could be bought or sold, creating a popular black market. The "banana currency" started to suffer high inflation and dropped drastically in value because the authorities would simply print more whenever they needed more money, and as such the black market often used Straits currency instead

One of the most serious problems during the Occupation was food shortage.
The people of Singapore were encouraged to grow their own vegetables.
In addition, the Japanese also issued ration cards to control supplies of rice and other essential items.
You could not get any provisions from shops if you did not have this ration card.
Each adult was given a ration of 4.8kg of rice per month and each child 2.4kg. This amount was subsequently reduced to 3.6kg per month for adults.
Even then, these ran out before long.

The Death Railway

Japanese soilders standing near the Death Railway

Source

The Death Railway stretched for 415 km from Thanbyuzayat in Burma to Nong Pladuk in Bangpong District in Ratchaburi province in Thailand. 304 km of the railway was located in Thailand and the remaining 111 km in Burma.
More than 16,000 prisoners died during the construction of the railway or about thirty-eight prisoners for every km of railway built. The prisoners died because of sickness, malnutrition and exhaustion. There was very little or no medical treatment available and many prisoners suffered horribly before they died.
The prisoner's diet consisted of rice and salted vegetables served twice a day. Sometimes they were forced to work up to sixteen hours a day under atrocious conditions. Many prisoners were tortured for the smallest offenses. The Japanese commander's motto was "if you work hard you will be treated well, but if you do not work hard you will be punished."
Punishments included savage beatings, being made to kneel on sharp sticks while holding a boulder for one to three hours at a time and being tied to a tree with barbed wire and left there for two to three days without any food or water.

Sources on how the people suffered ...

It was the Chinese who suffered the most. They had actively helped China in its fight against Japan. To punish them, the Japanese told all Chinese men between 18 and 50 years of age (sometimes women and children too) to report at certain centres. There, they were "examined" by the Japanese. There was no proper way for deciding who was anti-Japanese. At some centres, men wearing hoods or masks would simply point out certain people as enemies of the Japanese. Those who were identified as anti-Japanese were not allowed to go home. Some were given a small piece of paper stamped with the word "Examined". The word could be stamped onto their shirts or arms and became an important pass which allowed them to avoid further questioning by the Japanese. However, there were thousands who were identified as being anti-Japanese. These were taken in lorries to Changi Beach and other beaches on the east coast and killed there.

Japanese were invading Malaya, they also dropped bombs on Singapore. The air and sea defences of the British had thus been crippled. By 31 January 1942, the Japanese were already in Johor Bahru - the doorstep of Singapore. Only a damaged Causeway separated Johor Bahru from Singapore. The Japanese Commander, General Yamashita, set up his headquarters at the Sultan of Johor's palace. The choice was a clever one because the palace had a five-storey high tower. From this tower, General Yamashita could see every key target in northern Singapore. Although the tower was an easy target for the British, Yamashita was confident that the British would not fire at the home of their old friend, Sultan Ibrahim. He was right. To mislead the British, the Japanese in Johor made intense bombings at Changi. To make it even more convincing, the Japanese attacked Pulau Ubin on 7 February 1942. Thinking that the Japanese intended to invade Singapore from the northeast, the British moved precious stocks of defence supplies like petrol and explosives from the northwest to the northeast. This was exactly what the Japanese had wanted the British to do.

This source shows that the British thought that the Japanese were not well-prepared and thought it was easy to get rid of them.

'Singapore was a disaster waiting to happen. A so-called island fortress there were no defences except 2 large guns facing out to sea. They could not be turned round. The airfield at Salito was bombed and all the aircraft destroyed and the RAF were immediately evacuated. The Prince of Wales was destroyed and sunk in the Straits, so we had no air defence whatsoever. The Japanese had also been trained in and were very experienced in jungle warfare. The British troops were not.'

This source shows that the British were not ready to defend Singapore.
